Today’s reading opens with the passing on of leadership from
Moses to Joshua. Faced with the task of leading the Israelite people, the Lord
instructs Joshua, commanding and comforting him in the journey ahead. In verse
3, God promises that He will give them the land, yet they still must step out
in faith and take what He has given them. In this passage alone, God charges
Joshua three times to be strong and courageous. However, the task of being
strong and courageous would be daunting were it not for his promises “I will be
with you. I will not leave you or forsake you” and “the Lord your God is with you wherever you go”.
1) How many other phrases can you find that would have been a
comfort to Joshua?
2) God instructed Joshua to meditate on His commands day and
night, not allowing it to depart from his mouth (vs. 8). Why would this be
important for us and what might the benefits be if we allowed the Lord’s
instructions to become apart of who we are and what we do?
3) How can this passage bring us comfort as we walk with God
every day?
Prayer
Father, help us to remember that you go before us and will
never leave or forsake us. Because of these promises we do not need to fear or
be afraid, for you never change. Thank you for upholding us with your righteous
right hand, in times when we are weak or strong. {Deuteronomy 31:8, Isaiah 41:10}
