Today's Passage
After hearing the Lord from Mount Sinai (Exodus 20:22) and
agreeing to keep the covenant with the Lord, the people of Israel quickly
become impatient with the length of time Moses was on the mountain. They broke
the covenant by making an idol and worshiping it with burnt and peace offerings
(the same offerings they made to the Lord, before committing to the covenant).
The Lord’s anger burned against the people because they had turned so quickly
from the covenant He established with them to a man-made idol. Moses, again,
intercedes for the people of Israel. The Lord called Moses to the mountain,
renewing the covenant with His chosen people and proclaiming His great character
“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding
in steadfast love and faithfulness”.
1)What drove the Israelites to create the Golden Calf, so
quickly after making a new covenant with the Lord?
2)In what ways had they seen the Lord provide for them,
proving his faithfulness, prior to this?
3)Can you recall a time when the Lord has shown Himself to be
faithful to you?
Give thanks to the Lord for His never-ending faithfulness.
Though we may be quick to forget this and turn from Him, His steadfast love and
faithfulness never fail. Thank the Lord for His constant mercy and grace to
undeserving sinners!
