The ministry of Jesus begins with the coming of John and his
preparation for Jesus. The word of God came to John the Baptist designating him
as a prophet similar to those in the Old Testament. This was significant
because the word of God had not come to any publically proclaiming prophet
since Malachi and after around 460 years of silence God was speaking to His
people once again. The quotation used in this passage from Isaiah proclaims that
the Lord himself was coming to bring salvation to His people. John came
proclaiming a baptism of repentance and forgiveness of sins and preaching the
good news (the gospel). Different from the Old Testament prophets, John is the
first to preach the good news of the kingdom of God that is to come.
Question to Consider
1)Look at the question the people ask in verse 10 and John’s
response following through verse 14. What would true repentance of their sins
require?
Ways to Pray
Ask God “what then shall I do?”. True repentance requires a
change in behavior as seen in this passage. Ask God to reveal areas to you that
may need to “bear fruits in keeping with repentance” (vs. 8).
