What do you think of when you think of the story of Jonah? Too often this story has been told just as a story of a big "whale" swallowing a man and then spitting him out in 3 days. But this story is more than that! If you read this story carefully, you see a picture painted that brings glory to God and not man. Jonah is a self-righteous angry man, and God is a gracious and compassionate God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. Its a story of God pursuing the wicked and rebellious people of Ninevah and not stopping until they hear the message and repent. You and I serve an amazing God! His kindness should bring us to repentance. (Romans 2:4)
Questions to Ponder...
1. Why do you think Jonah disobeyed God's calling on his life to go to Ninevah?
2. Why was Jonah so angry when the people repented and turned to God?
3. What causes prejudice and self-righteousness to rise up in our hearts like Jonah's heart?
Ways to Pray...
Thank God for being compassionate, slow to anger, filled with unfailing love while for pursuing you. Ask Him to show the pride in your heart that causes you to get angry.
