God had called Elijah to a mission of bringing a message to Ahab and those who worship the Baals, that Yahweh (LORD) was God and not the Baals they worshiped. The God who calls Elijah is the God who provides for Elijah in chapter seventeen, so that he can carry out God's mission and bring Him glory.
Questions to Consider:
1. In Chapter seventeen, what were the ways that God provided
for Elijah, the man of God? How does God's provision to
Elijah mirror Jesus' promise to provide for us (Matt. 6:31-33)?
2. Martin Luther said that "Our hearts are prone to wander from
the God we love", because like Ahab we fail to believe that
God is great, so we waver (18:21). How did God demonstrate
that He is the Almighty to the prophets of Baal?
3. Look back at your life. How has God shown you that He is
the Almighty in your life? (see 18:39)
Pray: Try praying through Psalm 48; bow down before the God
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ and acknowledge His
greatness!
