e100 Challenge Day 32 - King Saul - I Samuel 8:1-10:27

Today's passage represents a major shift in Israel's history.  The elders of Israel demand a king like the other nations ( I Samuel 8:6-9).  Until this time Israel was dependent upon God's leadership in their lives, but now they want to look to a man for their direction.  But God warns the people this relationship will impact them negatively.  If the king is not walking in the fear of the Lord and in disobedience then the entire nation will experience God's discipline in his life.

But Israel wants a king like the other nations.  They select Saul who is everything you would want in a leader-at least from human standards.  He was tall, handsome and a perfect candidate to be their first king (9:1-2).

Discussion Questions...

1. What reasons did the Elders of Israel give in their request for a king (8:4-5)? What was the real reason according to verse 7?

2. What was wrong with their desire to have a king?

3. In what three ways did God instruct Samuel to respond to their request?

4. Why were the elders willing to ignore the warnings about a king (8:19-20)?

How Should we Pray?
Lord, help us to never reject you as king.  When we do, please be gracious and merciful to us.
