In today's reading we look at the background of the last of Israel's judges, whose name was Samuel. Samuel was born to Hannah, a previously barren woman (1:3-18). Hannah gives Samuel to Eli, the chief priest of Israel, to be raised as one dedicated to God (1:21-28). Eli's sons are very wicked and give evidence to the decline of the priesthood in Israel (2:12-25).
God declares He will choose a new priest from outside Eli's family (2:35) and begins sending messages to Samuel as a young man (3:1ff.). Samuel was already recognized to be a godly person (2:26), but soon his reputation expanded to all the tribes of Israel as one through whom God spoke (3:19-21).
1. The period of the judges is called a theocracy which means "ruled by God." Think through the cycle of the judges we discussed two days ago (below). What happens when people don't want to listen to God? What were the implications for Israel? What are the implications for us?
2. As followers of Jesus Christ we have returned to a theocracy in which we are dependent upon God to love us, lead us and speak to us. Connect your life with the cycle of the judges. Though God does not raise up physical enemies, like in Israel's day, isn't it better to follow God with our whole heart? Think though this idea.
2. This story speaks of God's faithfulness to lead the Israelites even when it's leaders were wicked. The calling of Samuel is an important reminder of God's love for His people. Ponder the meaning of I Samuel 3:21, "The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there He revealed Himself to Samuel through His Word." Is God faithful to do this today?
How Should we Pray?
God we thank you for your faithfulness to love, lead and communicate with us. You truly are a great God and we love you. Please speak to us today as we open the Scriptures and read about you. Amen.
The Bux-Mont & Telford Campuses of the Penn Valley Church Multi-site Network are participating in the e100 Challenge, a 100-day Bible reading program. True revival comes from prayer and knowing the Word of God. We can only live the life God intended if we know what He says about it. Join us as we read through this plan and grow deeper in our knowledge of God's Word.
