Luke 9:1-36 is packed with drama and some important insights into the heart of Jesus' mission. This passage records the sending out of the Twelve, the feeding of the 5,000, Peter's confession and a very special experience for three of the disciples with Jesus.
The twelve proclaim the message of the kingdom, but are instructed by Jesus to reject the one who rejected the message. Yes, the shaking off the dust off their feet is a declaration of judgment.
Jesus demonstrates a heart of compassion as he see the needy people as sheep without a shepherd (see Mark 9:36). And he feeds the 5,000 with a few loaves and fishes. Jesus is truly God demonstrated by the miracle.
The disciples recognize Jesus is the promised Messiah and as soon as they do, he connects them with His mission which includes a cross. Then a week later Peter, James and John experience the unveiling of Jesus' glory. These would be the premier apostles who lead the early expansion of the church.
1. So what does it all mean? Why do you think Mark linked them together?
2. What is the significance of Herod the Tetrarch's confusion recorded in verses 7-9?
3. Why did Jesus warn the disciples not to tell others of Jesus identity as Messiah?
4. What is the significance of the Mount transfiguration experience? Think of the role of the three apostles Jesus chooses to experience this. What does it mean?
