In Today's Scripture Reading we may miss the main point of this familiar story. This is not a story of the greatness of David, but the greatness of David's God. We will focus our discussion questions on chapter 17.
1. What was the conflict about in this story (1-11)?
2. What brought David to the battlefield (12-22)?
3. How did David view the threats of Goliath (23-27)?
4. Why did David volunteer to take on Goliath (28-44)?
4. The story hinges on verse 17:45-47, "David says to the Philistine, You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied...and the whole world will know there is a God in Israel...for the battle is the Lord's and He will give all of you into our hands."
Spend some time unpacking this idea. What are the implications?
How Should we Pray?
Lord, help us to view life through the lenses of David, who understood the true nature of conflict and the true source of victory...you Lord. Amen.
